Settled Down For Now

We called the emergency vet and he said up the Tramodol which has helped. He is finally settled down and resting. Going to sleep now while I can but I wanted to post that he is doing ok for now. Here is a picture of his incision with the port set up our vet used and one of him finally resting with my husband.

I read your earlier post and my heart just broke for you. It can be really rough those first days! I know you just want your boy to feel better and it really knots your stomach up to see him like this. But it will get better.

I don’t know what to say about the peeing, other than it may be because of all the fluids given during surgery? I know keeping them hydrated is really important so maybe the hospital really pumped him up. I also remember another dog here (a Dane) and she had a lot of incontinence after surgery also. So it is possible that the meds have just got his system totally whacked out. I hope it will clear up in the next day or so. And be sure to keep his skin clean, because urine can really burn the skin.

As to the pain, whimpering etc. The best advice I can give is to keep in contact w/ your vet and to really keep track of his symptoms. If more than one of you is watching him, it can get hard you each have to interpret what you are seeing. Also be aware that sometimes Tramadol can cause a lot of anxiety and panting (not all dogs, but a good number don’t tolerate Tramadol). So on top of everything else, you have to figure out if the panting is pain or just a side-effect! But you know your Cole, so you’re the best judge of how he’s feeling. So don’t be afraid to insist on good pain management.

I’m so sorry this is hard right now. Believe me when I say we all know what you are going through and we’re all here to help you and Cole through it.

so glad he’s resting now. I remember lying with my guy like that. It seemed to stop him from whining just knowing I was there stroking his back. Such emotion filled days. They do get better. Glad you’re getting rest too.

    Ditto to Donna..

Sooo glad he settled down for a bit. Yes, for whatever it’s worth, we do know what you’re going through as well as anyone else can. It is wonderful that you have helping hands! Try and rotate sleep shifts. Trust me, when you’re exhausted everything is ten times worse!

    The incision site looks good.

I know it’s hard to believe it does get better! Right now though, I know no matter how many times we tell you, or the vet tells you, when your sweet boy is hurting, not walking, peeing all over, it’s REAL hard to believe us!! It’s true though!! And yes, you still have some more rough times ahead during this recovery. Ugh!

Thanks again for the update. And how is Miss Ella handling all this? Smooch ’em both for me!

I know .. the first couple of days are super rough. I was just reliving my first couple of days with Shelby and she was like a junkie … pacing, anxious, no sparkle. I had to administer a little ‘tough love’ and let her work it out once the vet assured me she was doing OK and the meds were working. We also did get her some anti-anxiety drugs (a doggy valium) and that helped. It DOES get better. He looks great and that photo of your husband cuddling with him is perfection! True love!!!!

    Hang in there!!! OX

Hi guys, sorry no one was online last night to approve your first post in the forums. Your future posts will not have to wait so post away! I replied to your forum post before I came here, I’m glad to see Cole was able to settle.
I know this is hard- don’t doubt your decision (like many of us did) early in recovery. Stay positive and you will get through this sucky part.

The first couple of days are the roughest but as everyone has stated, it DOES get better! My Gizmo went through his amputation on Dec 3rd and he wimpered the first 2 nights but settled in after that. By the 5th day he was more himself although the Tramadol and Fintanyl patch made him a bit loopy. He was able to walk, go potty and get around much easier. Dogs adapt to their situation. Gizmo sometimes forgets that he’s missing a leg! Cole will surprise you. Hang in there and know that we are all thinking of you and our Tripawd buddy Cole. Please stay in contact with your vet. You know your dog better than anyone so if you suspect that anything is wrong, don’t hesitate to make that call! I’m sure my vet thought I was a basket case but when it’s your pup, you’ll do anything! Right now, he just needs rest & lots of loving! Please keep us posted on his progress & let us know how Ella is doing as well! Hugs to you all!

I agree the first 3 days are so hard. This journey is emotional like no other. Hang in there you’re doing great! Try to stay calm because Cole will feed off your emotions so if you stay calm it will help him stay calm too. We know believe me we know how hard this is. Things will start getting a lot better in a few days. Keep us posted.

Ohhh I’m glad things are going better for you guys, and that the tramadol helped. As the days go by you’ll see his sparkle coming back. Stay strong and know that we’re behind you 100% of the way. And now that you’ve posted in the Forums your posts will appear right away so don’t hesitate to post OK?

Hang in there 💕 His incision looks great! Daisy has a lot of challenges with pain the first few weeks so we had her on a combo of Tramadol, Gabapentin and Piroxicam.
